As you plan your trip to Orlando, you may do some research on things to do in the area while you’re here. While most people will spend a lot of time at the theme parks, many families are looking for less crowded and less expensive options for family attractions. A quick Internet search for “Cheap Things To Do In Orlando” will bring up a variety of results written by people who either
A) Have a never ending money supply and have a very different idea of “cheap” than the rest of the country or
B) Think taking little kids to a museum documenting the history of a small Florida city is a realistic choice for a fun family outing. Cheap? Yes. A place that kids will be excited about? Probably not.
As a local, I’ve put together a list of attractions that actually ARE inexpensive but will also be of interest to families.
1. Old Town USA Theme Park
Don’t let the term “theme park” scare you into scrolling past this unique and extremely fun attraction just outside of Disney. Old Town is a collection of novelty shops, restaurants, and amusement type rides that cater to people of all ages. Car enthusiasts will want to check out Old Town on Saturday nights when they have their weekly classic car cruise. Engines purr and hot rods shine as the crowd walks by to admire the classics. If muscle cars are more your thing, head to Old Town on Friday nights. Live music, countless dining options ranging from full service to fast casual, and places to grab a sweet treat are on almost every corner. As the sun goes down, adults can party at Sun on The Beach, a fast paced nightclub with themed party nights and bartenders who do their job very well. It is very realistic to enjoy Old Town without spending a dime, but it also very possible to have a great time on a budget.
Realistic Receipt: A family of four can enjoy unlimited rides at Old Town on Sunday and a casual dinner for around $60. This includes 4 Sunday Family Day Wristbands and a $20 meal at Jimmy John’s Subs or A&W.
2. Disney’s Boardwalk
Disney’s Boardwalk is a little slice of Disney magic without the outrageous price tags. Parking is free, and the best time to visit is at sunset in order to witness the beautiful sky over the water. 3. Downtown Disney
Downtown Disney is another family friendly part of Disney that is wallet-friendly as well. Eat before you go, because the restaurants here do not qualify as budget friendly, however the atmosphere and unique shops will keep everyone highly entertained. Let the kids’ imagination run wild as they build and create masterpieces in the Lego Store, cool off in the splash pad, listen to live music, peruse the art galleries, explore the toy shop and sample delicious Gheradelli chocolate, all for free! It is very possible to spend all day here and not see everything it has to offer! A family of 4 could enjoy a day full of outdoor fun for $0, however temptation may set in when passing the various colorful shops along the way. Want to take something home to remember your trip by? Pick up some sweet smelling souvenirs from Basin, or buy something special for your left handed loved ones at Lefty’s.
Realistic Receipt: Free for a day of family fun, but it’s possible to spend just $30 for an optional souvenir and four large, soft buttery pretzels from Wetzel’s Pretzels.
4. SAK Comedy Lab
They say a good belly laugh burns 10-40 calories, so planning a visit to SAK Comedy Lab after a day of ice cream, fried food, and soda is basically like working out! SAK is located in Downtown Orlando. Friday nights are a great night to go and be a part of the Duel of Fuels, a laugh your socks off between hilarious people and even more hilarious people, but there are shows almost every night of the week. SAK provides improve comedy, so the jokes are made up on the spot with plenty of audience interaction. It’s family friendly, so you won’t have to worry about dirty jokes or questionable references. They serve movie theatre type snacks, and parking on the street (if you can find a spot) is free after 6pm. If you park in the parking garage, SAK will validate your parking down to $4. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and plenty of money left over in your wallet

There is nothing “mini” about this putt-putt golf adventure! Pirate’s Island offers a unique and exciting 18-hole course that twists and turns through caves, around waterfalls and onboard a pirate ship. Located in Kissimmee off at 4330 W. Vine Street and open until 10 pm, this golf course is a great place to go before or after dinner, and is walking distance to many souvenir shops and restaurants.

Sidewalks surround beautiful Lake Eola, which makes walking or running the .9-mile trail a perfect outdoor activity. The theme parks are clearly the main attraction for families coming to Disney, and although it can be pricy, the memories and experiences your family will leave with are priceless. When you have some down time and want to experience the hidden gems of Orlando, try some of the places listed above. You’ll save money, have a lot of fun, and enhance your vacation dramatically by experiencing some of the not-so-touristy attractions that Orlando has to offer.
TapuTapu- Volcano Bay’s New Technology That Eliminates Waiting In Line
We are excited about the new theme park Universal is working on us for all of us to enjoy. Volcano Bay is under construction with great things to come!
Waiting in line is just part of what you do when you visit a theme park. You can wake your family up super early, get to the parks before they open, and ride a few rides before the parks start to fill up, but a few
hours into your day you’ll find yourself spending a lot of time in line.
Universal’s newest theme park, Volcano Bay, wants to change it. They’ve created a high tech system that allows you to “check in” on a ride with a personalized arm band, and then go abut your day enjoying all of the other aspects of the park. You can work on your tan, play with little ones in the kid’s park, eat, shop or hang out in the wave pool. As you explore the parks, you can use your wristband to check in on other rides as well. When it is time for you to ride, your personal wristband will alert you where to go. You simply show up and ride the ride! No more waiting in 30 minute (or longer) lines where you feel like you’re wasting the day away. No need to show up crazy early to try to squeeze all of the rides into one fun filled day.
TapuTapu is similar to Disney’s fast pass, but better. With Fast Passes, you select from a few open time slots for the rides you are the most interested in. If the time slots don’t work for you, you can either skip
the ride (which will probably make some family members unhappy) or suck it up and wait in line. With TapuTapu, all of the planning and guesswork and scheduling is done for you. All you have to do is wave your wristband at the totem pole in front of each ride, and come back when you hear the alert. With Volcano Bay’s interactive wristband, you can not only use the wearable wristband to hold your place in line, but is also a fun way to interact with different water features all over the parks, including shooting water cannons and activating light features on the park’s iconic Volcano.
TapuTapu wearables will be included in the theme park admission, and provided to each guest as they enter the park, They come in four original colors, pohaku brown, lau green, wela yellow and kai blue and are to be returned as you leave the park.
Volcano Bay is going to be a waterpark like no other, with thrilling rides and attractions for the whole family. This high tech solution to the age old issue of waiting in line is just another way Universal has stepped it up and created an experience that is fun, convenient and ultra modern for families looking to cool down in Orlando this summer.
Disney is a wonderful and magical place where you can dance with princesses and ride rollercoasters in the dark and spin on teacups and eat ice cream shaped like Mickey Mouse. In order for everyone to have the most magical experience possible, it is important for all visitors to abide by a few simple etiquette guidelines. Disney is a huge place, but you’ll find yourself surrounded by complete strangers all.day.long. You wouldn’t want someone acting crazy or disrespectful and putting a damper on your day, so it is important for you to also be considerate of other Disney-goers while you’re enjoying your day at the theme park.
No Cutting in Line– it’s a little ridiculous that we even have to say this, since we’re all adults and have had plenty of practice waiting in lines and taking turns. But you’d be surprised at how many people claim their family is “just up ahead. Bob! Bob! I’m coming Bob!” but who are really just trying to avoid waiting in lines. Don’t be that guest who cuts in line. If you really hate waiting that much, get a Fast Pass! Before you get in line, make sure everyone in your family is together so you avoid the death stares from other guests as you cut in front of them to meet up with your party.
Be Respectful– From the clothing that you wear (if you’re not at Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon, you don’t need to wear a bathing suit!) to the words you say, remember where you are. You are at Disney, where families with kids surround you. Don’t cuss, don’t get drunk and obnoxious, keep the PDA down to a minimum, and be considerate of the little ears and eyes that are all around you. If you are attempting to sample a drink from every country at Epcot, know your limit and pace yourself, being drunk at Disney is just not cool.
Keep Walking, Or Step Aside– there is nothing more annoying than bumping into someone because they decided to stop in the middle of the walkway to take a selfie/look at their map/tie their shoe/check in on Facebook. If you have to stop, move to the side so you don’t get run over. As tempting as it is, don’t walk through the theme parks looking through the viewfinder of your camera or phone. Enjoy the experience and get a picture when you’re in a safe place. If you’re looking at your phone and walking, you will probably run into something or someone.
No Flash Photography– you’re always encouraged to take pictures of the rides, shows, and characters that you encounter at Disney, but hold the flash. It can be bothersome to other guests and distracting to performers on stage.
Take Care of Yourself– This guideline can get a little awkward, but it needs to be said: Wear deodorant and shower before you come to the parks. It’s hot, it’s crowded and nobody wants to smell your stink. Body odor is bound to happen in a crowded place like this, but if everyone took a few extra seconds to freshen up before they headed out from their hotel or vacation rental, waiting in those long Disney lines would be a little bit more bearable.
Be Nice To The Characters- Again, it is crazy that this even has to be said, but don’t abuse the characters. Don’t let your kids wrestle, kick or be rough with the characters. It looks trashy, is unkind, and can be dangerous. Have your camera, autograph book and smile ready when it is time to see the characters, and quickly step aside for the next family.
Whether you are an annual pass holder just coming to Disney for the afternoon, or you’ve been saving up for years for this magical trip, Disney is a safe place where people go to have fun. Following these simple guidelines will ensure that everyone has a great time at The Happiest Place On Earth.
6 Ways To Get Your Vacation Off To A Horrible Start
A vacation is something you plan for, save for, and look forward to for months, sometimes even years. It is a special way to get away from everyday life and recharge your batteries. It is a time to connect with the ones you love, relax a little bit, explore new places and try new things. If you’re lucky, your vacation will go off without a hitch and you’ll be stress-free the entire time. However, just like in “real life,” things happen, plans change, and you have to adjust accordingly. Here are 6 ways to get your vacation off to a horrible start, (and how to avoid them of course.)
Don’t Bother Researching– if you’re planning a big trip, you’ve got to do some research. Failing to plan is planning to fail! Check reviews, read blogs, ask friends and family where they’ve stayed. When you decide on a place to go, check into the events and activities going on during that time. If you’re sensitive to noise, make sure you’re not headed to a city during their Annual Whistle and Tuba Parade. If you’re bringing a pet, make sure your accommodations are pet-friendly. If you’re allergic to smoke, double to check that where you’re staying is a smoke-free property. By asking the right questions upfront, you can avoid misunderstandings and problems during your stay.
Ignore The Weather Forecast– You may be surprised, but even Florida gets cold chilly during the winter. Don’t assume that because you’re headed to the sunshine state that you can wear your bathing suit and flip-flops everywhere. Check the weather forecast 5-10 days before your trip and pack accordingly. Pack proper footwear for your activities. Your new heels may be super cute, but your feet will be super sore if you wear them around Disney. Being prepared for whatever Mother Nature has in store will help make your trip more enjoyable.
Skim Over Your Email- You won’t believe how many families show up at the airport at 1 am with two cranky kids, a crying baby, and two stressed out parents and have no idea where they are going.
They panic, call the after hours line frantically, and are told to check their email. Directions are in our email. The information about how to get into the house? In your email. Your door code? Email. Alarm code? Email. And guess where you can find the address to where you’re going? You got it, in your email! Before you are tired and hungry and ready to cry, triple check your emails so you’re prepared when you arrive at the airport. If you are missing something, you can call and have it re-sent instead of trying to get the information in the middle of the night or halfway through your travel day.
Wait To Add The Extras– For houses with swimming pools, pool heat is a nice touch that makes swimming much more enjoyable in the winter months. But it takes a while to heat a big pool, and if you “wait and see” about adding this luxury until you get here, you’ll be “waiting and seeing” at least 24 hours before the pool heats up. If you’re the least bit worried about swimming in an icy pool, add the pool heat now so it’s warmed up before you arrive. Same thing goes for welcome packs, pool toys, and other extras. Add them now so you don’t have to wait around for them when you arrive.
Arrive (Really) Early – We understand that you’re excited about checking in and getting your vacation started, but we have a standard check in time for a reason. We take the cleanliness of our homes very seriously, and our professional and dedicated team of cleaners needs a specific amount of time to make sure your home is ready. If you arrive at 9 am and the house isn’t ready until check-in time (4PM) you’ll be doing a lot of driving and waiting around. Instead, either ask about an early check-in or plan your travel day so that you arrive closer to check in time. If your home is ready earlier than 4, we will definitely let you know. But save yourself the waiting around and the “Mommmm…. Why can’t we go in yet?!?” question from the kids by following the check-in time guidelines.
Don’t “Bother”: Us With Problems– if you have a problem, issue or concern about your home while you’re here, WE WANT TO KNOW! Oftentimes guests deal with a burnt out light bulb, squeaky fan, or other small household issues for the duration of their trip when we could have easily taken care of it had we known. We are not bothered or annoyed at all when you ask questions, make requests or voice your opinions or concerns about the property. We love to hear about the wonderful time you’re having and how much you love the place, but in our quest for excellence and superior customer service, we want to know if there is anything we can do to improve your stay.
Your vacation is a magical time, and we are honored that you have chosen Magical Stays to help make it happen. We want you to have a great time, and are here to answer any questions before, during and even after your stay. By avoiding some of the common mistakes that families make on vacation, you can have the adventure of a lifetime and avoid annoying, time-consuming and stressful “hiccups” along the way.
The One Vacation Rental “Extra” That Will Change Your Vacation Experience
The two main things most families focus on when they’re on vacation are time and money.
They want to cram as much fun into the time they have allotted for this vacation as possible while getting as much bang for their buck.
They want to feel like their time and money was well spent, and that they didn’t waste either.
Which is why, if you’re going to add anything extra to your vacation rental reservation,a Welcome Pack is the way to go.
And here are 4 reasons why:
You have options:
Magical Stays offers a wide variety of different welcome packs to have ready at yourental upon your arrival. There are grocery welcome packs, baby-related welcome packs, welcome packs for neat freaks, and welcome packs for those celebrating something special. The great thing about welcome packs is that they can be customized for your particular needs, and you can request a welcome pack for almost any need or occasion.
You save money:
The most popular Welcome Pack we offer is the Luxury Welcome Pack, which includes basic grocery staples to feed your hungry family, plus an option for an adult beverage that many find helpful after a long travel day. You could take the whole crew out to the grocery store as soon as you arrive, but you’re likely to spend more money right off the bat, (plus all of the extras that the kids throw in without you noticing!) This is also helpful when you’re hungry after a long travel day, because we all know what happens when we go to the store when we are hungry: we buy too much stuff! If you know you’re coming home to a welcome pack, you can eat, and then go shopping the next day with a clear head and full tummy.
You save time:
After a long, exhausting travel day, the last thing you’re going to want to do is find the local grocery store, get through the crazy parking lot, navigate an unfamiliar grocery store, wait in a line to pay, load everything into your car,(wait, is there room for all of this next to all of the luggage?) and unload it at your vacation rental. When you order a Welcome Pack, you go straight from the airport (or pull right into the driveway) and have food waiting for you. This means you can eat and jump right in the pool, explore the game room, or go to bed. Your vacation time is priceless. Do you really want to spend your vacation time shopping for groceries?
This goes for our other Welcome Packs as well. Baby related Welcome Packs save you from a late night trip to a pharmacy that you can’t find, for diapers or wipes. Romantic welcome packs let you surprise your sweetheart without having to make up an excuse to run out and get roses or chocolate covered strawberries.
They make vacations easier:
Adding the pool package is a great way to keep the kids entertained in the pool while you enjoy that adult beverage mentioned before. Ordering the snack pack gives you lots of options for munchies by the pool, and can be tossed into Ziploc bags and taken to the theme parks so you don’t spend $14 on a pretzel shaped like Mickey Mouse. If you’re coming to celebrate a birthday, the Birthday Cake package takes all of the work out of preparing for the special event, and lets you spend more time spoiling the birthday girl/boy and less running around getting decorations and party supplies. The utility package makes it easier to keep your vacation rental spic and span
without spending time and money buying cleaning supplies. When you order a welcome pack, you’re swapping out time at the store for time in the pool, and you’re saving money that can be spent on ice cream, Mickey Mouse ears, a fancy dinner date or other fun excursions that your family will remember forever.
If you haven’t added a Welcome Pack to your reservation yet, make sure it’s on your list of things to do before you arrive. Your family will thank you for thinking ahead, and you’ll be able to spend your time and money on things that they’ll remember for a lifetime.
Move over, Elsa, there is a new princess in town!
Starting November 24th, Walt Disney World guests can meet the newest Disney princess, Elena of Avalor! Princess Elena made her Disney debut back in August, and received a royal welcome by none other than Cinderella! Cinderella hosted the “Princess Elena Royal Welcome” Show right in front of the castle, and guests can continue to see this beautiful show throughout the end of the year.
So who is this Elena princess, anyway? Elena is Disney’s first Latin inspired princess, and embodies all of the qualities we expect from Disney royalty; compassion, adventure, thoughtfulness and has the mind of a true leader. There are some pretty cool things about Elena that set her apart from her princess predecessors:
1. She won’t have a love interest. Sort of like Merida in the Disney movie, Brave, Elena is too caught up in adventure, friendships and learning lessons to worry about falling in love
2. She has super powers. Elena has a special wand that can do a variety of “magic,” but never without a cost. It could serve as a fortuneteller one day, and a weapon the next. But unlike Rapunzel and her magical hair, the magic weakens Elena and must be used responsibly.
3. There is a new song in every episode. If you decide to some research and watch a few episodes of Elena of Avalor on Disney Channel, you’ll be happily surprised that each new episode features a brand new song! (Now you finally get “Let It Go” out of your head!)
Guests who want to meet Elena will find her alongside her other princess-y pals in the Fairytale Hall in Magic Kingdom. Guests will have the option to see Elena and Cinderella, or Rapunzel and Tiana. We suggest you get a FastPass, since everyone is anxious to meet the newest Disney princess!
Attention early birds! Disney’s Magic Kingdom has something just for you! If you and your family are up before the sun and heading to the Magic Kingdom before it opens, you won’t have to wait at the turnstiles until the park officially opens. At 8 am, you and your family can actually enter the park via Main Street USA, and be inside before the park opens for the day. PhotoPass is available, so you can take you iconic family picture in front of
the castle photo without a million people walking in front of the camera or bumping you out of the way. This early entry is great for photographers, as it is a unique opportunity to see Walt Disney World in it’s quiet and peaceful
times, before it becomes magical, organized, chaos.
Being able to enter the park at 8:00 also gives you a chance to eat breakfast at Casey’s Corner, where you can get muffins, bagels, and even a hash brown dog. Grab a cup of coffee at Starbucks and get a little bit of shopping done before your day even starts.
Although you’ll be in the park at 8, attractions open at 9 and all of the lands are roped off until the park officially opens. If being the first one into FantasyLand or TomorrowLand is important, you may want to bypass the breakfast and the shopping head right there. These two lands are the most popular, and guests line up right outside of the entrance to both lands in an effort to get in right away.
At 8:55, a magical show entitled “Let The Magic Begin” takes place in front of Cinderella’s Castle on the stage. This five-minute musical show features Mickey, Pluto, all of the Disney princesses, Mary Poppins and more. At the end of the show, the official “rope drop” happens at each land and guests make their way to the attractions.
If you plan to take advantage of Magic Kingdom’s early entry, snap a picture of your family on Main Street and send it to us! We may feature it on our Facebook prize and send you a little thank you gift!
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT LEGOLAND?
Opening this year will be the LEGO Ninjago World. Inspired by the popular series of LEGO building sets and TV show “LEGO NINJAGO: Masters of Spinjitzu,” the all-new fully immersive theme park land will take guests inside a martial arts world with a new attraction that uses 3D computer animation, “4D” atmospheric effects and brand new technology that will let guests experience all of the magic of NINJAGO. The LEGO NINJAGO Ride will allow guests to blast animated fireballs, lightning shockwaves and ice using nothing but their hands! Riders collect points and scores when each quest is completed
So, what happens after the holiday season? Well, that depends on the time of year… from spring to summer to Halloween and more, Minnie and some of her best Disney pals will be celebrating events and seasons throughout the year. Each season will offer changes in decor, music, menu items, “interactive musical moments,” and new costumes, adding to the festive fun
January 7, 2017 – March 19, 2017

We will be posting more Character Dining Experiences soon.
And don’t forget that our homes are only a few miles away.
Whether you’re planning your first family vacation or your passport has more stamps than a post office, there is just something about traveling to a new place that is exciting and fun. Where you travel, how often you travel, and how you travel says a lot about the person you are. Take a look at these 8 types of travelers and see which one you can relate to the most:
The Photographer- You buy a camera, and then plan your vacation around the places where that camera will be able to take the best pictures. You plan your destinations partly by figuring out which place will look the coolest on your Facebook timeline, and spend more time talking selfies than reading your guidebook or map. To you, traveling is about capturing the experience so you can relive them later. You’re guilty of taking 294 pictures of the same sunset, the same mountain range, or the same skyscrapers, but you just can’t help it, it’s all so cool!
The Planner- Your brain will explode if you’re out of arms reach of your beloved planner. You make lists, and make lists about the lists you have to make. You feel secure where there is a set plan, a timeline, and an itinerary for your travel plans. You almost enjoy planning the trip more than actually going on it. (Fact: You probably drive some of the people in your party crazy, but they’re so thankful that you do the planning and they get to enjoy the incredible trip you worked so hard on)
The “Go-With-The-Flow”er – Arch nemesis of The Planner. You basically decide where you’re going when you get to the airport, train station or jump in your car. You make it up as you go along. You stay with people you barely know, hardly ever check reviews, and find peace and adventure in just going with the flow and figuring it out along the way.
The Spender- When you go, you go all out. Your mindset is “I’ll only be in this city once, might as well enjoy it!” You spend a lot of money because hey, why not?! It’s your vacation, and you want to live it up. You eat at the best places, buy all the souvenirs you want, and get home with $2 in your bank account and a big smile on your face.
The Budgeter- You, like The Planner, have set out an exact figure for how much you want to spend and look for deals and discounts and freebies any chance you get. You’ve already looked at the menu where you’re going to eat and have calculated the price for all of your meals, including the tip. You don’t stray from your budget and come home completely satisfied that you had a great time and didn’t spend a dime more than you planned for.
The Map Reader- You’re into maps and travel apps and review sites and guidebooks. You research the placees you are going thoroughly and depend highly on the recommendations of other people. You cling to your guidebook or map like it is your Bible, and barely stray from what it says. You find comfort in learning from the mistakes of others and can’t stand the thought of risking your precious vacation time on something you haven’t researched
The Copycat- You know the places you like, and you go back again and again and again. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? You have your special city, the place you always stay, the restaurants you always eat in, and the activities you always do. It’s made you happy in the past, so why change it up? The familiarity of traveling to the same place makes you feel confident and in control, and you’re not a huge fan of change.
The “I- Hate-To-Wait”er- If you listed your best traits, patience wouldn’t be at the top. Actually, it wouldn’t even be on the list at all. You mumble under your breath and shift your weight back and forth while waiting in line at the airport. You check your watch all the time, sigh heavily when waiting for an elevator and walk 3 steps ahead of everyone in your party. You want to get to where you’re going, and you don’t know why everyone is holding
you up. You’re early for everything and get grumpy when everyone else is on time. Lucky for everyone in your group, you know the fastest ways to and from certain places, avoid traffic like the plague, and never EVER waste one second just waiting around.
The Lone Wolf- You like your space. You go to the movies by yourself, go shopping by yourself, so why wouldn’t you travel by yourself? You love the idea of not waiting on anyone, you like making your own decisions and doing things on your schedule. You find peace in figuring things out on your own and love your independence.
Were you able to identify yourself on this list of travelers? Everyone experiences the adventure of travel a little differently. Some like a rigid plan, while others prefer their travels to be more flexible. How ever you travel, the most important part is to have fun and make memories that will last a lifetime.
